Currently, we will meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, as well as the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. If there are meetings you are unable to make it to, that is okay!
Currently, we will meet at the American Legion's Outdoor Pavilion. This will work during the warmer months of the year, but we may need to come up with an alternate location during the colder months.
What is the age range for Scouts BSA?
Scouts BSA is for boys and girls ages 11 through 18 years old. Kids must either have turned 11 years old, completed the 5th grade, or completed the Arrow of Light 5th grade Cub Scout program, prior to joining.
How much does Scouting cost?
The National Capital Area Council (NCAC) Scouting fees for youth members (Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts) are $85 per year for national membership and an additional $80 for the NCAC participation fee, totaling $165 annually. For adults, the national membership fee is $65, and the NCAC participation fee is $80, making a total of $145 annually. New members also face a one-time $25 joining fee. These fees cover membership, insurance, and other council activities.
What equipment does my scout need?
In addition to their uniform, scouts are expected to have a day pack during outdoor activities, with their 10 essentials. (In cub scouts there were only 6 essentials.) These essentials include a compass, sun protection, flashlight, first aid kit, matches, pocketknife, trail food, water bottle, rain gear, and a whistle. Scouts should also now have a personal "Mess Kit."
Scouts BSA (the Troop level) operates all year long, therefore it is not necessary to follow the school calendar. We do not take a break in the summer as school does, but we do understand families may be away and scouts may attend fewer meetings during the summer months. We will plan our scouting year with the kids following the school calendar year.
Currently, any activities the scouts decide to plan may need to be paid for by each individual. We will soon be hosting fundraisers that will not only help to build the troop account, but also to build each scout's individual account which they can use towards anything scouting related.
What is a "Scout Account?"
When we host "individual fundraisers" and your child participates in these, the profits made will go into an account that can be used to pay for anything scouting related within the unit. It cannot be exchanged for actual money handed back to you, but rather be used to pay for weekend campouts, planned activities, or even summer camps! Scouts BSA Summer camps can be quite expensive, so fundraisers can be a great way to save for this yearly adventure!
In Scouts BSA, a Court of Honor is a formal ceremony where Scouts are recognized for achieving rank advancements and earning merit badges. These ceremonies, held quarterly, are a way to publicly acknowledge a Scout's progress and accomplishments. Courts of Honor are open to families, friends, and the public.
Recognition of Achievements are the key aspect of a Court of Honor.
Scouts who have earned a new rank or merit badges since the last Court of Honor are recognized.
Scouts who have participated in a special program that have earned a special award. (For example: There are many historical hikes that scouts can earn patches for participating in.)
Any other recognitions that the scouts or adults would like to acknowledge. Courts of Honor are a public and formal way to recognize and honor the Scouts' hard work and dedication.
The event is open to the Scout's family, friends, and community members, making it a significant occasion for all involved. Courts of Honor serve as a reminder of the Scouting program's goals and a way to encourage Scouts to continue working toward their goals.
It also brings the troop, families, and community together to celebrate the Scouts' achievements and foster a sense of belonging.
